PUPPY CARE
FEEDING:
8-16 Weeks Old, 3 meals a day.
Meal One: Full cream milk (made from powdered milk...cheaper and easier to digest), natural yoghurt, weetbix, a raw egg every other day and a few drops of cod liver oil.
Meal Two: Chicken neck mince or beef mince mixed with cottage cheese, chopped fruit and vegetables. All raw. Never include corn or onions.
Meal Three: Dry puppy food (I use Advance Puppy Growth, but any balanced reputable puppy food can be used) This makes puppies very thirsty, so fresh water should always be available.
At this age chicken necks and wings can be used to introduce the puppy to bones and to help with teething. As the puppy gets older, brisket bones, marrow bones, mutton and beef necks can be introduced. Never give the puppy, or dogs, cooked bones, as these are far too brittle.
16 Weeks onwards, 2 meals a day.
Meal One: As above.
Meal Two: This will depend on what kind of feeding you are going to adopt long term for your puppy.
The options are raw foods (BARF Diet), dry food and 'canned' food.
The Airedales at BIngleydale are fed using the BARF Diet, created by Dr Ian Billinghurst. His books can be found in many pet food outlets, or by contacting www.barfworld.com or www.drianbillinghurst.com
Good quality dry foods are available, but they can be expensive.
Canned foods will need to be supplemented with products to keep the teeth clean. Canned foods can also cause antisocial digestive probs!!
